We just took a quick spin through a few sites of the guests posting at Tag-board. The young guns have some delicious ideas. You'll find a lot of pink sites and a somewhat common theme, but each has a unique presentation.

Trends can start at the pre-teen and teen sites and there's a lot to learn from how that group interacts with Web sites. Important if you are developing sites that they might use (someday).

More Web Tricks with CSS

Combining Tags:

Span, Bold, and Underscore

Example:

Can you use this on your site?

Heres the code you can Copy and Paste (or type) into your Web page or Blog

<span
style="font-family:verdana,helvetica;
font-size:12px;
color:black;
background:yellow;">
<b>Can you
<u
style="background:#FF6600;">
use this </u>
on your site?</b>
</span>

Details you don't have to know:
  1. SPAN tag: First we tell the browser that we want a font size of 12px, a text color of black, and a background that is lime.
  2. HTML tag: <b> Then we use the bold HTML <b> to say we want our text to be bold.
  3. HTML tag: <u> Finally, we use the underscore tag<U> in the same line of text and change the color.
You can use a named color or look up color codes in the color chart.

Some colors we like are red, orange, yellow,green, blue, indigo, and violet.

Hint: The code will work if you put it all on one line. We put it on separate lines for demonstation. Either way usually works.

If it doesn't work on the first try make sure your blogging tool didn't insert stray line break <br> tags. You may not be able to see the line breaks. Use the delete key to make sure each tag is on one line.

You learn a lot by reading about what people are searching for in Google. Where we've been, where we are going. Television, music, lyrics, and the sport of the season.

Icons

What can you do with the 32 x 32 Icons? Use them on your desktop.
  • Right-click any GIF image.
  • Select "Save Picture As ..." and change the file type to .BMP
  • Tell your desktop shortcut to use it as its icon. How? Right-click on any desktop ICON and then click on Properties.
  • Click the Change Icon... button and enter the name of the .BMP file you just saved (you may need to rename it from .BMP to .ICO)

    We use ICONS to group similar projects, using the same icon for all items we are currently working on. For example, we are working on three projects. Each project has Excel, Word, HTML and other code, images, and ftp info associated and we create desktop links. We replace the default Excel, Word, and other default icons to match for each project.

    Project 1 - we use this icon for all related desktop icons.
    Project 2 - we use this icon for all related desktop icons .

    Some of us don't watch TV or listen to popular music. Someone had to tell me how to pronounce "Eminem". I do know what NFL means but will need to look up the rest (one at a time). Watch Your Image Size

    1. Right click on your image
    2. Click on Properties
    3. Look at the size

    The dimensions aren't that important. It's size that counts. We try to stay under 10,000 bytes (10K). If you see numbers like 60,000 bytes or even 100,481 bytes then your site isn't loading fast anywhere (except from your own PC).

    Tapping Your Brain

    (or Tapping Your Pain)

    The Computer Professional World According to Michelle

    (as requested)
    Ron wrote to ask many questions, but they are the questions we get often enough that we can answer them here. The answers are not easy since each computer professional might answer a little differently.
    " To me, it is like looking inside the window of some large company and seeing all of these people doing their jobs but not knowing what any of them are doing or how they got there. "
    Ron

    Here goes...

    I read all of the computer magazines and see all of the job ads and computer related companies that run ads to teach you courses in IT, Computer Graphics, Computer languages and computer courses like Linux, Java, C++, Databases courses etc...

    I have seen these so many times my mind is actually blurred by all of this as how they relate to getting a job. In other words, are these, ( C++, JAVA, Oracle, Cisco, Unix, MCSE Certified, A+ Cert Repair), all courses you would need to take to get that particular job... I mean, if I took a lot of courses and got some sort of certification on Oracle, would I find a job doing that? Or is that just part of a bunch of classes I would need to take to find a job...and what would the job be? Programmer? Oracle Programmer? That sounds stupid I know.

    so you want my job, eh?

    A: No. It's not stupid. The IT world is not easy to understand, and for the most part the younger kids get their degree, or work in a student assistant position while going to school, and then decide which part they want to focus on. For example, I work in Telecommunications, Network Software Support. Now, how one would prepare for an application developer position with a specialty in Networking is not an easy question to answer. You get the job first and then begin to specialize. Our student assistants start learning while going to school and if they are really good they often land a job.

    Does certification alone land you a job?

    A: It could. Not likely. Usually a few years of experience is required.

    These guys you see working behind the counters of computer stores like Best Buy or Joe Blows Computer World, that repair or find glitches in your computer or install programs or hardware for you....did they get these jobs from taking classes on A+ Certified Repair. Did they have to take more classes? Does that kind of work pay well enough to make a living doing it?

    A: Don't have a clue.

    Is there such a job as a Java Programmer?

    so you want my job, eh?

    A: Yes.

    Could you take all the classes you could find in Java and get some sort of Java Certification and then go out and find a job doing programming in Java?

    A: Possibly. They will usually want a fuller background. You would need to know a couple of languages. Visual Basic would help.

    What about Database Administrator? Can you do the same there? Is all of this incredibly hard to learn and would take years to learn enough to become good enough to get a job doing it?

    A: Classroom database training is a good start. Again, classroom work alone is not enough. The real learning begins once you are in the job doing the real work.

    I have no clue of the pay scales here for these various courses....I'm not sure which one would be worth investing the time to learn only to find out it isn't going to get me hired anywhere....like, I'd hate to take courses to get a Java Certificate and then find out no one uses Java programming anymore and there is no field for it.

    A: I personally would not focus on JAVA alone. Others do.

    so you want my job, eh?

    I know very little on programming. I know very little on HTML. But, I can learn these things if I knew what direction to head for. What would you suggest as a heading to get a computer related job or career? I have been checking on online courses due to my job schedule and all the hours spent there. I just see so many courses offered and am not sure which ones I would need to take to actively search for a new occupation instead of driving a truck for the next 100 years. Art is nice but "you have to eat" as they say....

    so you want my job, eh?

    A: The online courses are expensive, but convenient. You will get more from live classroom instruction.
    PHP and

    MySQL

    DUMMIES
    Not really for Dummies! It's just a quick start.

    If I had to decide what to learn right now it would be anything Open Source: Linux, Apache, PHP, and MySQL. All can be downloaded free. The "PHP and MySQL for Dummies" is an excellent book (it's not really for dummies, just a quick start). Personally, I think this is where the action is.

    You know this stuff. You are in this field and would have better thoughts on it than most people. I don't want to press you for info but more like ask your opinion on what all of this is about really. To me, it is like looking inside the window of some large company and seeing all of these people doing their jobs but not knowing what any of them are doing or how they got there. I don't know what courses they took to do each individual job, or which job is better to try and get, or which job is way too hard to learn or would take forever to learn or is almost impossible to get into.

    so you want my job, eh?

    A: From inside that window I see people who are Cisco certified and have previous work experience. Some do not have degrees but have learned networking or their specialty on the job somewhere. Most of the programmer types have degrees and learn the languages offered at that university. After one or two languages the rest come easy. We tend to have an older expert workforce and there are not often two people who do the same job.

    It is specialized to a level that in the last ten years I haven't had a boss that knows exactly what it is that I do. Even with a small staff of say 15 people in our little group, each person is highly specialized: OpenView, Ciscoworks, DNS, QIP, and more. My area is Internet Web application development and managing the data for a large network. I don't have a clue what my coworkers do.

    I've thought about computer graphics/graphic artist and know I would need to take courses in Photoshop and Corel and possibly Paintshop Pro...but I'm sure there are others I would need. Once I took them, would I be able to just go fill out an application for graphic artist if they stated these programs as requirements and all I had was a bunch of certificates from online schools? Is that a pipedream?

    so you want my job, eh?

    A: The bad news. We don't have a graphic artist. I don't think many shops do. Most business applications have few graphics. Clip art is available and we use assistants for Photoshop. Our one logo was contracted out. A long time ago an instructor said "nobody is going to pay you to Michaelangelize your work". And, with the Internet and the Web that is not as true as it once was but for the most part business applications stick to a rigid color palette with little or no graphics (see Yahoo and Amazon).

    If you have some spare time one of these days and feel like telling me "the world according to Michelle", I would gladly listen and be ever thankful. If what I'm asking is insane, just humor me! hahahaha! Thanks Michelle, and sorry again for all my killer emails... Wondering....and confused, Ron

    so you want my job, eh?

    $70,000+

    As a government worker my salary is public information. After nearly 20 years in this field I make a little over $70,000 per year. That's for a Senior Programmer Analyst or a Software Specialist II with experience, training, or exposure to the following: Database design, managing long-term projects (more than one year, multi-million dollar projects), designing and developing applications, Networks, writing manuals, Java, JCL, REXX, SAS, Basic, FoxPro, dBase, Databus, RMS, NT, Cobol, Fortran, JavaScript, HTML, ColdFusion, PHP, MySQL, Oracle, Unix, FTP, and the usual office software like Visio, Excel, Word, and more. We work on various platforms including IBM mainframe, DEC, and PCs.

    so you want my job, eh?

    I never recommend this occupation to anyone. It requires maintaining a high-level of intensity, long hours, off-shift hours, sleepless nights, and eating from vending machines. You live the job, it becomes your life.

    Hits, Hits, and More Hits

    A few folks have written lately to ask questions about search engines and how to get hits.

    A few months ago, Daniel Cronin wrote a two-part article here for Mandarin where he shares his tips and tricks.

    The article Hits hits hits and more hits will teach you in one page to count the way counters do. In the next part, Gimme gimme gimme Daniel gives you the inside scoop on how much search engines count.

    Dude, Give Me Another Hit!...

    Note:Mandarin does not submit pages to search engines. We aren't real careful about our Meta tags either. In the beginning we submitted our site to Yahoo! From there we presume that all of the other engines picked us up.

    The Sunday Paper

    So many have asked lately about the world of computer professionals.
    How is the downturn affecting you? Are you worried?
    We work full time in a secure industry. For senior-level professionals there is always plenty of work. Curiously enough, people have been asking this same question for many years, or making statements like "computers are getting so sophisticated we will not need programmmers". Not true. Mostly we simplify what we do by telling you we are programmers or developers or designers.

    my boss, the genius

    Today we are reading the local newspaper and find computer-related jobs listed
    FoxPro programmer and Help Desk
    That's us. We do FoxPro. The salary is way off.
    Java programmer with client/server development and design experience
    Java by itself is boring. They are looking for coders.
    ...vision and leadership for staff development and growth, strategic planning, and integration of ...developing and implementing processes and technologies and...
    Not interested. They don't know what they want. Right now we are not taking any new work at Mandarin.

    Our full time day jobs are fun. During the day we work in ColdFusion, FoxPro, PHP, MySQL, REXX, a little SAS, and more.

    my boss, the genius

    It's mostly Internet applications but we also work with mainframe databases, and standalone applications. There is always data to be extracted and ported into Oracle and other databases.

    we stay busy

    We help manage "the largest network West of the Mississippi" from a data perspective. Now, the boss doesn't know exactly what it is that we do and there isn't anyone who tells us what to do or how to do it. We figure that part out. They don't need to know what we do or what languages we code in or what design techniques are used. They only need the end result.

    don't do it

    We never recommend this profession to anyone. It can be high stress, long hours of maintaining a high-level of intensity, and is nothing like the courses you took in college. In the classroom the instructor has done most of the type of work you will do in the real world. In the real world it is your job to find the problems or opportunities.

    we stay busy

    Defining the problem to be solved is the most time-consuming aspect of the work. You will lose sleep, eat dinner out of vending machines, drink too much Pepsi, and will eventually wear thick glasses.

    You will not work with graphics. The assistants do that.

    You will not work with photography. The assistants do that.

    The fun part of Web related work is done by assistants or contracted out to graphics professionals.

    Creative Uses for Shadow Filter

    BostonBluEyes
    We noticed that BostonBluEyes uses the shadow filter for the upper left logo on his site. It looks nice and is nearly free as far as download time. A very effective use of text instead of graphics.

    Shadowing Text Question

    Is there a way to
    set an external CSS to shadow
    all text on the page that references it?
    If so, could your provide the code...
     I am at a complete loss.
    Thank you!!!! :-)

    Our first response was why would anyone want to do that? Shadow filter an entire page.

    And, what a WOW we got when we tried it. The effect is so incredibly awesome, even using the color lime. Thanks for a great idea ZyberBoi! Please let us know when you do it on your site so that we can all see it in action.

    This worked for us
    We changed our BODY and TABLE tags like this
    body{
    background: white; color: black;
    filter:shadow(color=lime);
    margin-left: .0in;
    margin-right: .0in;
    margin-top: .0in;
    margin-bottom: .0in;
    background : White;}

    table{filter:shadow(color=lime); }

    The only code added to our existing style in the external CSS style sheet is

    filter:shadow(color=lime);

    We added it to both our BODY tag and to our TABLE tag.

    We had to add it to our TABLE tag since most of our content is contained within a TABLE tag. To make your entire page display using the shadow filter it would probably have to be included in each tag. You may even have to define the P paragraph tag with a shadow filter.

    Steal these Graphics

    Free icons

    Those little 32 X 32 standard sized icons you see around are free at Zeldman.com

    Here are a few that we borrowed.

    Dynamic HTML

    This paragraph is a dynamic HTML demonstration. Click anywhere in this paragraph to see the font size to increase to 18.

    Here is the code if you want to copy and paste (or type) it into your blog.
    <p onclick="this.style.fontSize='18';">
    Click me?
    </p>

    Click me?

    Bordered Box

    I like that box border with the dots. How do you do that?

    With inline style. The DIV tag.

    YOUR TEXT GOES HERE

    Copy and paste (or type) this code in your blog or HTML page.

    <div style="width:200px;text-align:left;
    padding:5px;background-color:#66FF66;
    border:1px dotted black;font-size:12px;">

    YOUR TEXT GOES HERE

    </div>

    We like using style because it's free. No graphics to load. No bandwidth to waste. We used the color #66FF66 from the web safe color chart for this box.

    - dgsblog
    DGSblog offers visitors the default size font or the option to make the font bigger. The difference between the dgsblog presentation and the left-bar font size increaser we see (or don't see) at our daily newspaper Web site is that a low-vision reader can actually read the option on dgsblog. That's where other implementations lose it. Low-vision users can't find the magnifying glass.
