Fun with HTML and CSS

The OtherSide posted a good rendition of the TIME magazine cover, while Fred is doing some wild glowing effects in purple.

Elvis

Last month we posted an Elvis box, something like this -

Here is our box using the named color Gold
BEFORE  ANYONE  DID  ANYTHING,
ELVIS
   DID   EVERYTHING

You know you want it
The Elvis box has a change of color inside the box. Copy and paste (or type) this code in your Blog or Web page.

<div style="width:250px;
font-family: sans-serif;
font-weight: bold;
text-transform: capitalize;
text-align: center;
padding: 4pt;
border: 2pt;
border-style: double;
border-color: black;
padding:10px;background-color:gold;
border:1px solid black;">
BEFORE  ANYONE  DID  ANYTHING,
<span style="color:white;font-weight: bolder;">
<br>ELVIS </span>   DID     EVERYTHING
</DIV>

And today we see A Small Victory doing it like this.

BEFORE ANYONE DID ANYTHING,
I
DID EVERYTHING

Nice touch. Poor Elvis.

Yea, we're still on the Elvis thing. The newer ELVIS 30 #1 Hits is good, but I'm hooked on blogging to the Elvis Medley

A Gillian Welch CD (Christmas present) has a song about Elvis and at the day job today it was Marc Cohn singing about Elvis and Memphis (Walking In Memphis)

There's a part in the song where someone asks "tell me, are you a Christian child?" and he says "Mam, I am tonight" I was walkin' in Memphis...anyway his feet are 10 feet off of Beale and that's how I remember Beale Street and Memphis. Spiritual. A place that ignites the music within you even when you didn't know the music was in you. There's a need within to return to Memphis to see if it was all real.

Lyric Correction: Walking in Memphis
Now Muriel plays piano
Every Friday at the Hollywood
And they brought me down to see her
And they asked me if I would--
Do a little number
And I sang with all my might
And she said--
"Tell me are you a Christian child?"
And I said "Ma'am I am tonight"

Internet Slang

There are a number of listings for Internet slang and even this one assumes that we already know the slang. The professional IT world doesn't use this Internet slang. No, not even the LOL that you all know.

For example, if someone asked "ASL?"
My reply would be "No ", meaning I do not use American Sign Language (ASL).

But apparently in common Internet slang ASL means age, sex, and location. But you knew that, right? BTW, we have weekly ASL meetings. I'm just a slow learner and can't see the diagrams. My Deaf coworker and I mix our abilities and communicate

like this taking turns typing

ASL Laugh

The fingers of both 'D' hands move repeatedly up along the jaw line, or up from the corners of the mouth. The signer meanwhile laughs.

Another resource says the L handshapes pull back the corners of the mouth to show the shape of the mouth when someone is laughing.

Hey, does anyone know how to sign WTF?

Fun with Time Tables

TIME

FARRAGO
is

BACK
. . . . .
.....

Farrago got slammed by their host today. Good news - they are back up and running.

Want to make a TIME mag
looking table?

You can do it all with text, or you can insert an image like we did. Maybe you can improve it.

Copy and paste (or type) this code in your blog
<table width="100" height="140" bgcolor="black"
bordercolor="red" border="5">
<tr><td valign="top" align="center">
<span style="font-weight: bold;color:red;
font-size:14px;">
TIME
</span>
<br>
<span style="color:white;font-size:9px;
font-family:sans-serif;">
<br>
FARRAGO
<br>
is
<br>
<a href="http://farrago.netfirms.com/">
<img src="images/linksite10.gif" align="center"
border="0"></a>
<br>BACK
<br>. . . . .
<br>.....
</span>
</td></tr>
</table>

That just looks like a lot of code. It's not.

Remove or replace http://farrago.netfirms.com/ with your link.
Replace the images/linksite10.gif with a small image.
Note: We use the <br> break line tags, but your blog probably automatically inserts the line breaks.

Are we having fun yet?

The Fridge Thing

We think it was Gary Turner who started this Fridge thing. He says that " Three fridges have now modelled themselves on the web. Freaky. And cool. And ironic that it's cool. And cool that it's ironic that it's cool. "

And by next week how many of you will have posted your Fridge Art? We must all be very bored or just want to have some midnight fun.

Our Fridge

You know you want to show your fridge!

Post your fridge photo. Then, let us know so we can all see it!

Road Warriors

"I'm sorry, Sir. You'll have to come with me..."
-George Sessum
We think George Sessum has been traveling too much. After they do the airport physical search, my Rob always asks
"how many bad guys have you caught lately?"

"Some people tap their feet, some people snap their fingers, and some people sway back and forth. I just sorta do em all together, I guess."
-Elvis in 1956, talking about his way of moving on stage.

The Day After Christmas

Technology: A Virtual Christmas

I love shopping online. We have shipping confirmations, order confirmations, shipping notices, and tracking, all online. We can see today, the day after Christmas that -

The Amazon presents are in Kentucky.
Macys voided items ordered, and sent pieces of matching sets

Free Shipping! Macy's gave us free Christmas shipping! We're still laughing at the little bitty hand towel that Macy's sent FedEx overnight mail. A little tiny hand towel all alone, no matching bath towels.

Everything is returnable. We can ship that little bitty hand towel back to Macy's for a full refund.

Shipping by Christmas means just that, shipping by Christmas. We didn't actually receive the gifts, but most were shipped by December 16th or 17th.

  • One of ten items ordered from Amazon arrived.
  • A few odds and ends from Macys arrived in time for Christmas.
We are not bothered, it is too funny sitting here with all of these notices and no gifts. We have virtual gifts and that's all we need to be happy. We did have a good Christmas. Virtually everything went right.

IT Trenches

Back to work. Sometimes we buy vaporware. Sometimes we pay a lot of money for vaporware.
IT happens.
It's quiet in the office today. On Christmas Eve there were more than 200 emails waiting. Today there are only 39. Most of the emails are generated by an Internet Web application.

I coded it to cc me to make it easy to watch on how customers are using this order and tracking system. The app is growing and being embraced beyond all expectations. The customers are making up new ways to use it and that's a good thing.

The beauty of Simplicity
How do you find time to blog?

I have four screens up right now. One PC with dual flat screens is working hard on some jobs so I turn to the 21" monitor to my left where one screen is displaying work and I watch while I type here in Blogger.
  • Internet Explorer 5.0 on PC 1
  • IE 6.0 on another
  • Netscape 4x
  • IE 5.5
Our customers can come in with any browser. The most difficult to code for is the AOL version of IE. If we can get the pretty HTML formatted emails to look good in AOL then they will look good anywhere.
If you can make it there, you'll make it anywhere

Interrupt: Need to talk to you in a bit
Interrupt: Email dinging: Free Jared Spool Brain Sparks session in Cambridge. Delete.
Interrupt: Free subscription to yet another technical hardcopy mag, others pay $205, they say.Delete

The emails reveal who is working today. It's us. No external customer notifications coming in.

A Christmas Bit
If I were Santa Claus this year
I'd change his methods for the day
I'd give to all the children here
But there are things I'd take away

I would rob the invalid of pain...

Off to work now. Can you finish this?

If giving would not make you content, what would you steal or take away?

CSS Instead of Graphics

CSS Text: Shadow and Span

Shadow Filter

Text is free or cheap. The following is text, not a graphic.
Peace

The Peace is HTML text with the CSS Shadow filter applied. Copy and paste (or type) this code in your Blog or Web page.

<table width="200" style="filter:SHADOW">
<tr>
<td>
<span style="font-family: Arial Black;
                    font-size:32px;
                   color: #FF6600;">
Peace

</span>
</td>
</tr>
</table>

CSS Text: Glow

Glow Filter

You don't need images for this effect, just a STYLE tag.
Still playing with the glow filter today. Wanna play?
Here's the code if you want to copy and paste it (or type it) into your blog.
<TABLE
STYLE="filter:glow(color=yellow)">
<TR><TD>

YOUR TEXT GOES HERE

</TD></TR>
</TABLE>

The Filters are a powerful way to add punch to a page without graphics. It's a fun filter to play with.

Hint: The code will work if you put it all on one line. We put it on separate lines for demonstation. Either way usually works.

If it doesn't work on the first try make sure your blogging tool didn't insert stray line break <br> tags. You may not be able to see the line breaks. Use the delete key to make sure each tag is on one line.

If you can't store images just use our code. Copy and paste (or type) this code in your Blog or Web page

Fun Web Tricks

Float Image Right

One line of SPAN code...
It's easy to use the CSS inline style code SPAN to float an image to the right. All you need is one line of code.

Here's the code to copy and paste (or type) into your blog or web page.

<span style="float:right;"><img src="girl.jpg"></span>
You can add more attributes to either the SPAN tag or the IMG tag.

More? SPAN is inline style that you type directly in the BODY of your HTML of your Blog or Web page. For example, if you are blogging you would use the SPAN tag in your post. SPAN is not used in the HEAD section or in the external Style Sheet.

For a quick test copy and paste our code and the image stored on our server.
<span style="float:right;">
<img
src="http://www.mandarindesign.com/girl.jpg">
</span>
This is inline style using the SPAN tag.
It should work fine in your blog.
Just change the image to your image
and your words. Ah, now didn't that
work easy? Now, just
insert your image and words.

Bloggers Don't hit the enter key between lines on any code. Try to spread it on one line if you can. Most of you have settings that automatically inserts a line break <b>. It can muck with the code you are inserting.

Who is Daniel Cronin?

Daniel Cronin is a freelance writer who writes for Mandarin and other Blogs and Web Help related sites. His main site was ShutMeUp and he did indeed shut up for way too long. There are now new a few fonts available at ShutMeUp.

The Forum

Daniel started a Forum for people who need Web Design (HTML, CSS, etc.. ) help and also built a directory for related sites. The idea is that we can get ideas for new tutorials from the forum.

Forum Directory

The Forum Directory lists related sites.

And, as if that wan't enough (he is prolific) he started building a blogger thing to be finished...someday.

Merry Christmas Daniel, we thank you for all of your contributions. Now we are off to visit your new sites.

Reminder to self:
Go steal borrow Christmas colors from svensempire.
Where did we put the TrentAdams link?
Tell Daniel that the idea of stealing ideas is our idea and when others start stealing ideas then we all will be stealing from each other like we have always done. Suggest that Daniel go reinvent the wheel. We are just checking to see if you are paying attention Daniel. Smiles to you.

Gary and Fiona are the proud parents of this new little angel.

How did you color that text?

One easy way is to add color is to add inline CSS style to your tag. Here's how we do it with the <b> bold tag.

Text Colors: Inline Style

Copy and paste (or type) this code in your Blog or Web page for Pink bold text.
<b style="color:pink;">
YOUR TEXT GOES HERE
</b>

Some named colors are red, orange, and blue.

You can use a named color or look up the hexadecimal color codes in the color chart.

Holiday Decorations

Do you want Peace?
Copy and Paste (or type) this in your Blog or Web page.

We used the named color orange. Here are some other named colors: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet.

Peace Peace Peace
