Bordered Box (solid)

I like that box with the solid border. How do you do that?

With inline style. The DIV tag.

YOUR TEXT GOES HERE

Copy and paste (or type) this code in your blog or HTML page.

<div style="width:200px;text-align:left;
padding:10px;background-color:ivory;
border:1px solid maroon;font-size:12px;">

YOUR TEXT GOES HERE

</div>

That's an Ivory background with a maroon border.

More named colors are here (opens in a new window) and even easier copy-and-paste for bloggers is here (opens in a new window).

Note: Some tools insert a line break that trashes the copy-and-paste code by inserting a line break <br>. Delete the line breaks and the code above will work.

Playing with Named Colors

Named colors are fun to play with. We don't use them in the day job. Only the hexidecimal colors that look like this #FF6600 or this #f60 can be used in professional applications that are open to a wide audience. We still stick to the 216 browser safe colors.

The named colors work in Internet Explorer and that's about as far as the guarantee goes.

Let's Play

Here's three named colors: seashell, snow, and mintcream.

Notice we did not use the word OULIPO in this example. What is Oulipo? Look down a few posts.

Look out the window and snap a picture

That's the neighbors house. On our street just about everyone flies the US Flag. One house alternates seasonal flags with the US Flag. Another neighbor replaces it with a black flag when the Raiders lose a game. We get high winds here and one flag is wrapped up in a bunch right now. That's how it goes here on our little street in the somewhat rural area of West Sacramento, California.

Happy Friday and
Happy 30th Birthday Paul

A Conspiracy: O-U-L-I-P-O

Jim at Everything Burns. He thinks in numbers. Interesting reading, a unique perspective.
Conspiracy: Use the word "Oulipo" in your blog.

Caterina, Waggish, and Jim make mention of Oulipo today. And we saw loowho use it only minutes after we posted. Kathryn used it in her blog and defined it for us. Diane is playing along and so isLiz. We noticed that Cindy at loo who even joined the conspiracy. The Dude said "It was against my better judgement but I love a good conspiracy". AKMA said it and while we haven't peeked in over there yet we think he already knew the meaning of the word before posting it. See what you started Jim. A conspiracy.

Theophany: A cool looking site that is really easy to read now that Trinity has strutted her stuff. Theo is intense, interesting, and thought provoking or something like that. Today Theo tells us about James Kavanaugh's piece
There Are Men Too Gentle To Live Among Wolves Among Wolves, published in 1970 and still ringing true.

"There are men too gentle to live among wolves --
Who prey upon them with IBM eyes
And sell their hearts and guts for martinis at noon.
There are men too gentle for a savage world
Who dream instead of snow and children and Halloween
And wonder if the leaves will change their color soon..."

We found deep meaning in it today. Especially today. Thanks Theo. We always forget to say that. May we color in the words now. We brought crayons.

Dashed Border

I want that dashed border around my picture. How do you do that?

Like this?

Method 1

Dashed Border: Quick and Dirty...

Copy and paste (or type) this code in your Web page or Blog:

<img src="images/v21.gif"
style="border: 1px dashed Black;"
width="50" height="50">

Replace the image name with the name of your image yourpicture.gif.

<img src="images/v21.gif"
 style="border: 1px dashed Black;"
width="50" height="50">

The text is too tiny to read but it will work.

Method 2

Dashed Border: Using Inline Style...

You can add the

style="border: 1px dashed Black;"

to your IMG tag like this.
<img src="images/v21.gif"
style="border: 1px dashed Black;" >

Method 3

Dashed Border: Using CSS Style Sheet...

You can put the style in your external style sheet
.dashed {border: 1px dashed Black;}
and then refer to the image like this:
<img src="images/v21.gif"  class="dashed">

FROM THE ARCHIVES

Sounds of Silence

New Subway Walls and Tenement Halls

We're off to find the lyrics to Sounds of Silence. Maybe Mom was right, perhaps it does have a deep social meaning, unlike Dylan whose words were simply words not meant to be analyzed and synthesized (unless you were smoking some wacky weed or in Mom's English class where she forced students to write about Dylan's lyrics). It was somewhat clear why she had students write about Dylan's words; she was struggling to understand a deeper meaning herself.

But, I never really caught on to the Simon and Garfunkel song and today it makes me curious. Could it have been about the perception of the world by the deaf? Or, are we all partially deaf? I remember lyrics like this -

"the words of the prophets are written on the subway walls, and tenement halls..."
From the album
"Best Of Simon And Garfunkel"

Sound of Silence

Hello darkness, my old friend,
I've come to talk with you again,
Because a vision softly creeping,
Left its seeds while I was sleeping,
And the vision that was planted in my brain
Still remains
Within the sound of silence.

In restless dreams I walked alone
Narrow streets of cobblestone,
'Neath the halo of a street lamp,
I turned my collar to the cold and damp
When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of
a neon light
That split the night
And touched the sound of silence.

And in the naked light I saw
Ten thousand people, maybe more.
People talking without speaking,
People hearing without listening,
People writing songs that voices never share
And no one dare
Disturb the sound of silence.

"Fools" said I,"You do not know
Silence like a cancer grows.
Hear my words that I might teach you,
Take my arms that I might reach you."
But my words like silent raindrops fell,
And echoed
In the wells of silence
And the people bowed and prayed
To the neon god they made.
And the sign flashed out its warning,
In the words that it was forming.
And the signs said, "The words of the prophets
are written on the subway walls
And tenement halls."

And whisper'd in the sounds of silence.

Peace Mom.
Wish you were still with us.
I finally get it. We have new
subway walls
and tenement halls
now.

We call them blogs.

All they wanted was a simple centered pink bordered box.

Simple Bordered Box

Your text goes here.

But the copy and paste code doesn't always work perfectly with blogging tools. The blogging tool inserts a line break <BR> tag inside the DIV tag. The problem is that you can't always see that break tag.

The FAQ page

We will start using the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) page to post the code that will work with your blogging tool. The How to make a simple centered pink bordered box is right on top today.

Having problems with the copy and paste code? Let us know. We can post the solution here or on the FAQ page.

Surprise Images

Dude, you need an image

We asked dwitchy if we could cut out some little seasonal squares from her page to use for surprise images. We will lift little 50 x 50 pixel pieces from dwitchy and add to the collection of surprise images.

Each image is about 500 bytes. Not much cost in bandwidth. The browser has already loaded the five images. Now each time we reuse the same image it costs us nothing in download time. It's free.

Copy and Paste the Surprise Image

We store the surprise images at www.mandarindesign.com/images/v1.gif where you can direct link or right-click to copy.

The images are named v1, v2, v3, and up to V25.

Copy and paste (or type) this in your Blog or Web page.

<img
src="http://www.mandarindesign.com/images/v21.gif"
width="50" height="50" >

You can change the number 21 to any number between 1 and 25.

Testing the surprise image...

Yep, that is number 21 so we made at least 21 small images, maybe more. We're off to make some more.

Reusing the Image is Free

The images are now loaded in cache. We can reuse the same image without any bandwidth cost.

Hint: The code will still work if you put it all on one line. We put it on separate lines for demonstation. Either way usually works.

If it doesn't work on the first try make sure your blogging tool didn't insert stray line break <br> tags. You may not be able to see the line breaks. Use the delete key to make sure each tag is on one line.

Refrigerator Door Magnets

See, the project is cool before you even know what it is. AKMA has this clever refrigerator magnet thing going on today. We hope they run with the idea. It's a good expansion of the Web Fridge Project by Friday Fish Wrap that made the Mandarin fridge famous for a day in USA Today.

That was cool.

What word would you add to the AKMA collection?

The Moment of Seduction

Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue 2003

image for decoration only PaulKatcher.com is a Blog site that uses the moment of seduction effectively and literally. We use the phrase "the moment of seduction" in reference to the moment of entry into a Blog, Web site, or application.

When designing new software our goal is to seduce the intended audience up front. For example, an American may be seduced by a page or form that is designed using the color of money, the colors in a US dollar bill. For other audiences, we might use an entertaining splash page while code is being loaded.

Paul demonstrates the technique by using the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue 2003 image to seduce his audience.

It's working

Article: Interaction is Free

Comments got you down?

If your comments are down or you don't have interaction on your blog read our short article about Tag Boards -- Interaction is Free.

We use Tag-board for our instant interaction.

Want to say something? Say it here at the Tag Board

Comment Withdrawals

You will enjoy a peek at Rieke's Blog. She links to us like this -  Mandarin Design .

And at this shady place is an interesting name game post.

You are now welcome to comment.

Web page loading too fast?

image for decoration only Is your Web page loading too fast? Want to slow it down a bit? Add a Tag-board with JavaScript that runs at another site and then add a counter with JavaScript that runs at another site.

Your page is now dependent upon the speed of your host, the Tag board server, and the counter server. If any go down or are running slow then your page will slow down. A quick cure for those pages you wrote that load so lightening fast.

Need to slow it to a halt? Add a commenting function that uses JavaScript.

If that doesn't work you can add a few images that are more than 10K. That works for us.

Hint: We don't demonstrate JavaScript here for a reason. JavaScript is often the culprit in a slow loading Blog or Web page.
What is it?

What we demonstrate here is usually HTML and CSS. When we use images or supply small images for quick-loading.

Shadow Filters, Glow filters, colored boxes, and other demonstrations are nearly free in download time. They don't add much to the load time.

It's difficult to slow down a Blog or Web page with text.

Exploding Cigar is an interesting place to visit. It requires us to download software in order to run it. We never do that.

Comments

Comments are still down? Comments were lost. Darn.
Angie is still using the "f" word. Here's a taste of Angie -

F*bleep*uck our so-called allies. F*bleep*uck keeping troops in their countries too, btw. Let 'em fend for themselves. Oh wait - didn't they try that once before? F*bleep*uck it, let 'em try again.

When BigBadBubba barges in and bends them over a chair - I bet they start humming GodBessAmerica again. P*bleep*ricks.

Now, that's a Mama with an opinion! It's easy for us to run around with our peace sign, her opinion takes guts.

Gary is still rocking our socks with new tricks and treats that load a little faster today, while Photo-hrensy.com is playing with the shadow filter. It looks like this -

At Shirls we found this free association of Unconscious Mutterings.

We will be answering the technical questions we received via email this week here at Mandarin.

Happy Monday

We love this Monday, it's a holiday for us -- President's Day. Are you having a nice Monday?

Waiting...

Yesterday afternoon when the Taterbug had not arrived the sun came out and it started raining. Since I was watching for a car anyway I snapped a pic of the beautiful rain.

The rainbow someones God made while I waited for Taterbug But behind me was a rainbow. I wondered if someone had prayed to their God who makes rainbows. Snapped a few pics but they weren't showing up so instead I just enjoyed the moment and the beauty thinking that even if Taterbug didn't show up I could make it through the dissappointment. Outside, smiling at the rainbow that someone's God made, I felt Rob behind me, a gentle touch.

It was my Taterbug arms ready for a hug

Thank you for the r a i n b o w

ROY G BIV

The colors of the rainbow. To say rainbow in color

copy and paste this code in your Blog or Web page.

Taterbug is Tall

15 years old, 6 feet tall
We get to see the Taterbug today, my son, the joy of my life. He's with his biological mother now and I still think of him as my little boy. Making this picture required choices I didn't want to make.

Exit without saving? No, save my bug.

Are you sure you want to delete? No.

Quality low, medium, or high? Stop it!

Transfer in progress...

Transfer complete

And that is how it went with my baby. His mother didn't want him. I did. He was leaving for Israel and as the adoptive mother said "he already has a name that fits". Nathaniel. Nathan. Words I cannot even type now. Long story longer...he was my child until age 7. He thought he grew in my tummy. Then suddenly one day, no warning, his mother took him from my arms.

A mother can't ever know which child she loves the most. We love them all in different ways. But, without hesitation I can say that Nathan was and will always be the joy of my life. We love many in our lifetime: mothers, fathers, husbands, sisters, and daughters. Nathan is above all and will always be.

Nervous about seeing him. What do I say? His voice has changed and he looks a lot like his father who wore jeans sized 28x38. He was a gentle man like Nathan. He cried when signing the papers to send Nathan to Israel. But, he cried for him leaving while I was crying because I wanted him to stay. He did stay and I thought he would be safe with us forever.

The Shadow Filter Again?

Shadow Filter on the <TD> Tag

This is pure text. You don't need graphics for this effect. Here is loo who's favorite way to use the Shadow Filter.

loo who's homepage

You know you want it.

Copy and paste (or type) this in your Blog or Web page

When you post the code it will take on the color of your anchor links (it will match your blog).

YOUR BLOG NAME HERE

What did loo hoo do?

  • Added the Shadow Filter filter:shadow(color:#ccccff); to the Table Data <TD> tag.
  • The shadow color is #CCCCFF. We might use a color like #FF6600
  • Used the SPAN tag to make the font Papyrus.

You already know that Papyrus only renders as Papyrus when the font is installed. We have it installed here but not on the other PCs we work from.

Hint: The code will work if you put it all on one line. We put it on separate lines for demonstation. Either way usually works.

If it doesn't work on the first try make sure your blogging tool didn't insert stray line break <br> tags. You may not be able to see the line breaks. Use the delete key to make sure each tag is on one line.

Valentine Tell All

Love

Happy Valentine's Day

A secret we usually keep tucked away... but we saw a few stories today and would like to share ours. We didn't meet online like some others we read about.

It was a Newspaper Ad that went something like this -

"Rich executive, jeans-to-tux guy... road warrior, seeking..."

My daughter called and left a message like this -

" My friend drives her Jeep to the Symphony with the top down....call her... "

She left my name and phone number! Brat.

He called (he's very polite like that). We met for a Valentine brunch at the Hyatt (I'm very polite like that). That was eight years ago. We married shortly thereafter. He is perfect. Everyone loves him. We live in humble peace and harmony.

How did you do that?

How to do the text overlay? Relative Positioning and Overlapping Text

The box? Box: Bordered Solid We used the color #CC9999 and the popular background color that is easy to remember background color #F5F5F5: a very light gray.

The man? He's mine.
