Halloween It was a dark and scary night...
The Paranormal Research Society of Texas enlightens people about the use of the Quija Board (often misspelled as "Quigi Board") and identifies its meaning.
We thought it was just a board game.
Who prey upon them with IBM eyes
And sell their hearts and guts for martinis at noon.
There are men too gentle for a savage world
Who dream instead of snow and children and Halloween
And wonder if the leaves will change their color soon... "

MANDARINPUMPKINPATCH
We borrowed the pumpkins from Euan Semple, cutting squares from a perfectly balanced photograph. You are welcome to take a pumpkin with you.
Copy and paste this in your Blog or Web page.
It will look like this.
Notice that the pumpkin image name is v268.gif. If you want a surprise pumpkin image change the number to 269, 270, 271, or 272
Halloween Decorations
We just saw what KandyDish did with Gary's tutorial on the glow filter with the Halloween cat. Now that's a classy cat.And this is too funny. Before we even finish this post we see the pumpkin at 2flower. Got Pumpkin?
CSS Tips and Tricks
We found these links at Dave's Blog.CSS Creator
Select different CSS properties from the page on the browser, to select any display of color, look for the HTML tag you like to make this, and generate this into CSS code, copy and paste into your website.
Slants
Its a hack. A trick. It is a way to make pure HTML and CSS draw something that is neither vertical nor horizontal. Do you want a slant of the heart?
Slide Show
Fade Images JavaScript Slide Show
The fading image you see here is actually done with the outdated Fade Applet. But, the JavaScript slideshow looks identical.
Easy Instructions
The JavaScript Slideshow instructions are easy to follow and it works well. You can compare and select either slide show for your pictures. You will probably want to use the JavaScript Slideshow.
Pictures
We took three pictures today of the backyard birds feeding, then compressed the images (or sucked the life out of them as Brykmanta would say) for faster loading.
ACCIDENTALTECHIES
Misbehaving.net has an interesting post about accidental techies. Are you an accidental techie?
Colin, did you land in the IT world intentionally? How about you Gary? You are in the IT field, right Sarchi? Frank?
We know that Justin and Brendyn aren't accidentals. Both are from RIT. How about you Jen? You are accidental LA, right? Leslie?
And we know that Bill is a web hack, but was that accidental? And Riri, you are a software developer. Was that your intended career? Colleen did you choose to manage an office for an Internet Service Provider or did you just land there?
We'll be visiting Misbehaving.net to see how the comments play out.

Google Bar Blogging
Did you know that when you are using the Google Toolbar and Blogger you can click on the orange B to automatically blog about the page you are reading? It hyperlinks and automatically inserts the title for you.
Linking Syntax
Yo Stu. If we look funny when you land here it's because the link points to http://www.mandarindesign.com/blogger.html/. There's no slash / at the end. It confuses the browser and the style sheet doesn't load.
It should look like this http://www.mandarindesign.com/blogger.html
Blue Borders?

We just got back from a four-day convention in Carmel and took a few pictures in the area. Here's a picture of a restaurant in Monterey. We named the picture v267.gif.
The image is hyperlinked to a Gallery page named carmel/index.htm (click the picture to see the hyperlinked page).
Image: v267.gif
HTML Page: carmel/index.htm
Do you see a blue border around the image? The problem with blue borders around hyperlinked images is that we never see our own. By the time we see an image on our page we are looking at the visited link color.
How do you remove the blue border around images?
1. Blue Border
HTML code to hyperlink an image. The default is a blue border.
<a href="carmel/index.htm"> <img src="v267.gif" alt="Restaurant"> </a>
2. No Border
HTML code to hyperlink an image. No border.
<a href="carmel/index.htm"> <img src="v267.gif" alt="Restaurant" border="0"> </a>
3. Black Border
HTML code to hyperlink an image. CSS Style for Black border.
<a href="carmel/index.htm"> <img src="v267.gif" alt="Restaurant" border="0" style="border:1px solid black;"> </a>
Black Border: Copy and Paste Code
HTML code to hyperlink an image using CSS Style for the Black border.
<a href="carmel/index.htm"> <img src="v267.gif" alt="Restaurant" border="0" style="border:1px solid black;"> </a>
Copy and paste (or type) this in your Blog or Web page.
It will look like this.
This example was added so that you will see the image when you copy and paste the code. Thanks Ann.
We can't see the blue border on the last two images. Do you see a blue border in your browser?
Getting to Know You
Still in progress...updated Thursday October 30, 2003|
Here's some graffiti from earlier this month that you can add to today. You tell us in the comments who you are, where you live, what you do, where you've been, or where you are going. Or, just say hello. Leave your mark, read some good blogs, and have a great weekend. We'll be back on Sunday. |

I'm Keri, and Mandarin has totally trashed my blog (Buck Up, Little Camper) in the best way possible.
Am I too late? My name is Michael and my blog used to be popular with at least 10 people about a year ago. Then I had a baby (well, my wife did most of the hard work), my life got complicated, and my blog suffered. I am posting more now and hope to not only get my loyal following back, but maybe get up to 15 readers! (Dare I dream?)

Hi, I'm Gary Williams, an unemployed programmer,
former newspaperman and sometime pizza cook. Right now I'm in
upstate New York (the hills outside of Binghamton) but,
since there aren't any jobs here and a friend
of mine suggested I go back to Calfornia and
help her move into her new house,
I think I may move back to the Bay Area
sometime this month.
(I'll let you know, meg, if this works out.)
I like the stuff meg teaches us, and
I steal some of it and fiddle with
it (in true programmer style).
As a consequence, sometimes meg steals it back! (Yay, meg!)

Right now, I'm an independent IT contractor

here in Rochester. Also, I'm seeking a
permanent IT position as well. If you know
anybody who needs an IT position, let me know!!!
I need a job!!! I'm deaf and involved with an
deaf organization that provides many types of
fun events, such as recreation, for the deaf,
hard of hearing and hearing people where there
are opportunities for them to socialize.
Kathryn
Hello, I'm Kathryn. I'm a professional counselor
who is trying to build a private practice in
Austin, TX.
I used to keep a blog called The Hestia Chronicles, but
had to retire it because my name was too associated
with the personal nature of that blog, making it
incompatible with starting a therapy practice.
I did start up another personal blog with a
pseudonym, though.
I tend to be a homebody, though I
went up to my hometown (Syracuse, NY)
in June for my 40th birthday,
to visit my folks.
I'll be returning for Christmas.
I'll be attending something like
BloggerCon, only it's called the
Webwriters Convention, or JournalCon, and it's
being hosted in Austin!

Small Boxes
We make boxes here. Today is box day. And we found an interesting implementation at Noded. It's a little ditty that goes like this.
"Weblogs should give you the freedom to use alternate methods to emphasize what you're trying to say."
Copy and paste this in your Blog or Web page.
<blockquote> Weblogs should give you the freedom to use alternate methods to<span style="border:teal outset 1px;">emphasize</span>what you're trying to say. </blockquote>
It will look like this.
Weblogs should give you the freedom to use alternate methods to emphasize what your trying to say.
What does this code do?
- <blockquote> indents the block of text.
<span style="border:teal outset 1px;">says put a teal colored border outset style, 1 pixel wide around the text that follows.</span>end the bordered (or boxed) text.- </blockquote> ends the block of indented text.
Can you show me how
to use CSS Inline Style?

Fun With Colors
Change the color brown to any color in the color chart. Let's try a few named colors without opening the color chart. How about some color names that we might remember like
coral,
darkred,
darkorange,
darkslateblue, and
sienna.
While we are peeking at the color chart anyway let's see if the funny color names work.

So why is it named dodgerblue?

Colorizing Images
by Lynn Rockwell
September 2003
This short tutorial is growing in popularity. Lynn includes step-by-step instructions; first on how to make a photo black and white, and then how to add just a touch of color back into the picture.
I colorized the red car on Rob's T-Shirt. The instructions were easy.
In a bonus round Lynn showed me how to put a thin black border around the photograph. Off to find that code now.
The Power of the DIV

Gone Swimming
That was refreshing. I sat in the sun and thought about the DIV and my friend, the genius.
Performance Tuning Tip:
When you think of Web application performance, don't forget the power of the DIV.
Using a DIV instead of a TABLE to serve dynamic pages can speed up the page load time from minutes to snap-of-a-finger fast. After some quick changes and a couple of DIVs the page with thousands of
rows of data populates instantly. We're finding that the power of the DIV can be measured in thousands of rows, not hundreds of rows like the TABLE.
